Trauma-Informed Stress Management

Margaret M. Clausen-Lecture1 (1).png

While I have historically practiced long-term psychotherapy especially focused on traumatic stress, the psychological impacts of chronic and terminal illness, pain management, grief, and transformative experiences, my practice has evolved over nearly two decades.

I work with the integration of transformative experiences, loss and grief, and trauma-informed stress management. My work focuses on practical, holistic wellbeing in collaboration with you.

Here is a little more information on what my psychotherapy practice focuses upon:

Transformative experiencers are people who have had some kind of transcendent experience that they may or may not name as "spiritual." It may or may not be described by the experiencer as positive.  Often people need assistance integrating these experiences into ordinary life which includes discovering meaning and reflecting on the experience as well as  developing ongoing practices to continue the integration process into the future.

Some would say that much of psychotherapy is about processing loss and grief -- these are certainly some of the most difficult circumstances humans experience. We can feel grief from a variety of experiences. I have specialties working with traumatic loss of various kinds, as well as grief from losses of physical abilities and physical limitations.

Trauma-informed stress management and practices to help increase psychophysiological (mind AND body) relaxation -- also known as parasympathetic dominance -- is essential to well being. Stress in the body and the mind exacerbates any difficulties we face. When coming to psychotherapy with me for trauma-informed stress management, we focus on understanding the stress you are experiencing, its impact on your mind and body, and practical techniques you can learn to assist calming your mind and body.  I have extensive experience working with trauma recovery.

My Approach to Psychotherapy

Collaborative. Warmly intelligent. Seasoned.

The modalities I use in psychotherapy all have in common that we are products of our history, biology, identifications, present circumstances, and the wider social environment. Mindfulness, transpersonal, psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral, EMDR, biofeedback, and Internal Family Systems are among the perspectives I use to greater or lesser extent depending upon your needs and goals.

Because my work is short-term, focused, and practical, we work together to use what you find is most helpful.

Together with clients I work to ease distress, build on strengths already present, gain insights, and cultivate relating to yourself and other people in life-enhancing ways. Meaning-making, self-compassion, and relational skill-building are frequently a part of the process too.

I'm a seasoned psychologist with nearly two decades of experience. I offer a secure therapeutic relationship where you can be yourself and grow.
